General Aung San (1915–1947) was a Burmese independence leader and statesman who played a pivotal role in securing Myanmar's independence from British rule. As the founder of the modern Burmese armed forces and a key architect of the nation's future, he worked toward a united and sovereign Burma. On 19 July 1947, he was assassinated alongside several members of his interim government in Yangon, just months before independence, and is remembered as one of Myanmar's most influential national figures.
